Can stockpile measurement be flown?
Walking piles with a wheel and guessing tonnage is how inventory writedowns are born. A twenty-minute flight turns the yard into a measured surface with volumes you can book.
What the job actually is
Aggregate, coal, chips and scrap get measured by pacing, truck counts and estimation. Month-end inventory carries error nobody can quantify, and disputes with suppliers or auditors get settled by whoever argues best.
Signs it is worth automating
- Inventory value in piles is material to your books.

- The yard is active enough that piles change weekly.
- Auditors have already raised measurement methodology.
What the cell looks like
A mapping drone flying a programmed grid over the yard, photogrammetry turning overlapping images into a surface model, and volumes computed against base surfaces per pile. Accuracy that satisfies auditors comes from ground control or RTK positioning, flown the same way every time. Many sites hire this monthly; high-frequency yards bring it in-house.

- A handful of small piles: a rover-and-pole survey is cheaper and fine.
- Material under roof or in bins: photogrammetry needs sky.
- You need real-time numbers daily; consider fixed sensors instead.
- Airspace over the yard cannot be routinely flown; check first.
What an engineer has to verify
- Stated accuracy with method: ground control points or RTK, and against what check surface.
- Whether your auditor accepts photogrammetric volumes; most now do, in writing is better.
- Per-flight or monthly service pricing against your inventory error cost.
- Density assumptions: the flight measures volume; tonnage is your density number.
Safety is not on that list because it is not ours to determine. Cell design, guarding and the risk assessment belong to an independent certified integrator, every time.
