About Steel Collar Robotics
An independent, multi brand robotics dealer for small and midsized manufacturers, built on a simple bet: that the honest read is worth more than the easy yes, and that the companies who need automation most have been served worst.
What we do
We help small and midsized manufacturers work out whether a job on their floor can be automated, what it would take, and what it would plausibly cost. When the answer is yes, we supply the equipment and introduce a certified integrator to design, build and commission the cell. When the answer is no, we say so, which happens more often than our margin would prefer.
We are brand independent by design. We track more than six hundred machines across seventy eight manufacturers, from collaborative arms and industrial six axis robots through SCARAs, deltas, gantries, mobile robots and end of arm tooling, with published specifications recorded from manufacturer datasheets rather than from memory. A dealer who represents one manufacturer will always discover that one manufacturer's arm is the answer. We carry many precisely so that our answer can be the machine that actually fits, including none of them.
Who runs it
Russ Rosenzweig is the founder and chief executive officer of Steel Collar Robotics.
The robots came first, and they came early. He has been reading about them since childhood and never really stopped, working through the literature the way other people work through a favorite author's back catalogue: the engineering, the industrial history, and the fiction that got there decades before the engineering did. That is normally the kind of biographical detail that reads as decoration on a page like this one. Here it is the reason the company exists.
The formal training came next. He studied quantitative economics and Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences at Northwestern University, a program organized around the proposition that messy human systems will yield to rigorous modeling if you are honest about your assumptions. Then years at Price Waterhouse automating warehouses, which in that era meant conveyors, control systems, labor standards and a great deal of time walking concrete with a stopwatch. It was automation before the word acquired any glamour, and it taught him the thing this company is built on, which is that the constraint is almost never the machine. It is the process feeding the machine. An MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business followed.
Then a long run building expert networks. That business is easy to describe and hard to do: someone has a problem, somewhere there is a person who has already solved it, and essentially all of the value lives in the quality of the matching. Do it well and you become the first call. Do it badly and you are a directory with a phone number. Years of that leave you with firm opinions about what a responsible referral actually requires, which is why this site will not hand you an integrator's name before we have confirmed that the firm is genuinely interested and available. A name you have to chase is not a referral. It is a lead we passed off as one.
Why this is possible now, and was not before
Every stretch of that path pointed at the same company, and for most of it the company would not have worked.
Industrial robots became capable long before they became accessible. An arm could do the work, but specifying it took a specialist, programming it took a specialist, and justifying it took a feasibility study that cost more than a small manufacturer wanted to spend to find out the answer was no. So the market served large plants well and small ones barely at all. Not because the technology could not help a forty person shop, but because the cost of finding out was set at a level only a large plant could absorb.
That is the part AI changes, and the claim is narrower than the industry usually makes it. AI does not weld. It does not present a part to a fixture, and it will not discover that your real bottleneck is two stations upstream of the one you asked about. What it collapses is the cost of the first honest answer. A plant manager can now describe a station in plain language at eleven at night and get a serious preliminary read: whether the physics work, which class of machine applies, what it would plausibly cost, what it would not solve. Often enough the read is that a robot is the wrong answer and a fixture, a conveyor or a process change is the right one. That conversation used to require a sales engineer and three weeks of calendar. It now takes ten minutes and costs the manufacturer nothing.
Which finally makes it possible to run this business the right way round. Tell people the truth first, at no charge, including the truths that cost us the sale, and earn the projects where the truth turns out to be yes.
Joe
The concierge on this site is named Joe. He is an AI, he says so plainly when asked, and he is never presented as a person. He is built on Claude, from Anthropic, and he has been given something most sales tools are not: permission to say no.
Joe reads from our equipment matrix, our process library and a casebook of real installations with published sources, and he is instructed to tell a visitor when a job should not be automated, when the task volume is too low to justify a cell, and when the bottleneck is somewhere other than where they think it is. He will not tell you a configuration is safe, he will not give you a fixed price, and if you describe an injury he stops selling entirely. Those are hard rules in his instructions, not aspirations in a brochure.
Ownership and how we make money
Steel Collar Robotics is owned by Arete and Associates, LLC.
We earn a dealer margin when equipment is purchased through us, and we have referral relationships with the certified integrators we introduce. That is the entire model. It appears in the footer of every page on this site, because a customer who has to work out how we get paid is a customer who will reasonably wonder what else we did not mention.
We do not and will not take investment from a robot manufacturer's venture arm. Neutrality between brands is not a marketing position here, it is the product itself, and it cannot survive an owner with a preferred arm.
What we are not
We are not the integrator of record, on any project, ever. Cell design, guarding, risk assessment, commissioning and safety validation are performed by independent certified integrators in accordance with ANSI and A3 R15.06 and ISO 10218. That is a contractual boundary rather than a matter of style, and the practical consequence is that we will never tell you a configuration is safe. Only an assessment performed on your actual floor can establish that.
