Can loading a stamping press be automated?
Press tending removes a person from the most dangerous position in most metal shops. That is usually the real justification, and it is a good one.
What the job actually is
An operator places a blank in the die, actuates the press, and removes the formed part, often with tongs and a two hand control. It is repetitive, fast, and the consequence of a mistake is severe.
Signs it is worth automating
- Somebody hand feeds a press all shift.
- You have an injury history, an insurance driver, or a near miss on this operation.
- Runs are long enough that die changes are not constant.
- Blanks are flat, consistent and can be destacked reliably.
What the cell looks like
A 10 to 50 kg class arm with a magnetic or vacuum end effector, interlocked to the press control so the arm and ram can never occupy the die at the same time. Part presentation and scrap handling both need designing. This is a fenced application in nearly every case.

- Your die changes several times a shift and each requires new tooling and teaching.
- Blank destacking is unreliable because sheets stick together and you have no fanner or double blank detection budget.
- Runs are short prototype batches rather than production quantities.
- You are hoping to automate around a guarding problem. Fix the guarding first, with your safety resources.
What an engineer has to verify
- Press control interlock capability and who signs off the safety circuit.
- Blank destacking method and double blank detection.
- Part removal path and scrap or slug handling.
- Die change frequency and what the robot needs to change with it.
- Cycle rate the press actually runs at versus the robot's achievable rate.
Safety is not on that list because it is not ours to determine. Cell design, guarding and the risk assessment belong to an independent certified integrator, every time.
