Robots that load CNC machines in small shops

If your operator spends most of the cycle watching the machine run, a tending robot buys you spindle hours you already paid for. If your work changes every hour, it probably does not.

Who this is for

You run mills or lathes and your operator loads a part, closes the door, and then waits. Spindle utilization is lower than it should be, and you cannot staff a second or third shift. Parts run in families that repeat, even if the exact part changes.

What the cell looks like

The usual shape is a collaborative arm beside the machine with a two finger or pneumatic gripper, plus a way to present parts: trays, drawers, or a pedestal feeder. The part that surprises people is the plumbing. The machine needs an automatic door and automatic workholding, and the robot needs to talk to the control, usually through M codes or discrete I/O. Chips and coolant matter more than the arm does. A cell that runs unattended also needs a plan for chip evacuation, coolant, and what happens when the machine alarms out at two in the morning.

Illustrative. Integration runs higher here than in palletizing because door and workholding automation, machine interfacing, and part presentation are all custom to your machine.

The math here is not labor replacement, it is spindle hours. Work out how many additional hours a week the machine would actually cut if it never waited for a person, multiply by your shop rate, and subtract what the cell costs to run. Shops that add most of an unattended shift on a machine that was already busy tend to see the strongest returns in this category. Shops that automate a machine that was not the constraint see very little, no matter how good the cell is.

Every figure on this page is a planning range, not a quote. We publish ranges because a fixed number before an engineer has walked your floor is a guess wearing a suit. A certified integrator produces the fixed-price quote, and that is the number that holds up.
