Can MIG welding small weldments be automated?
If you cannot hire welders and you have repeat weldments in batches, this is the strongest case in the whole catalog. If your work is one off repair, it is one of the weakest.
What the job actually is
A welder sets parts in a fixture or tacks them by eye, then runs a series of repeatable welds on an assembly. On repeat work the welding itself is highly consistent; the setup is where the time goes.
Signs it is worth automating
- You have open welder positions you have not been able to fill.
- The same weldments come back in batches, even modest ones.
- Joints are accessible without extreme repositioning.
- Somebody in the shop can own weld quality signoff for robot produced welds.
- Your backlog is limited by welding capacity rather than orders.
What the cell looks like
A cobot welding package or a fenced arc cell: arm, integrated power source, torch, table and fixturing. Fixturing is the actual project. Fume extraction and arc screening are mandatory, not optional, and are frequently left out of first quotes.

When the answer is no
Read this part first
We would rather talk you out of a bad purchase than into one. If any of these describe your version of this job, the honest answer is probably not yet.
- Your work is constant one off fabrication and repair, so nothing repeats enough to fixture.
- Weldments are heavy enough to need positioners well beyond a starter budget.
- You do certified structural work where the procedure and inspection burden dominates.
- You have no fixture budget. A robot with poor fixturing produces repeatable bad welds.
What an engineer has to verify
- Torch access to every weld on the part, checked physically not on a drawing.
- Batch sizes and changeover frequency between weldments.
- Fixture design and cost, usually the largest hidden line item.
- Weld process, wire and whether the power source integrates with the arm.
- Fume extraction, arc screening and where the operator stands.
- Who owns weld quality signoff and what documentation customers require.
Safety is not on that list because it is not ours to determine. Cell design, guarding and the risk assessment belong to an independent certified integrator, every time.
