Can panel sanding be automated?
Flat and repeating geometry is the easy end of robotic finishing. If that describes your panels, this is one of the more predictable projects in the catalog.
What the job actually is
Somebody sands panels, doors or flat components between coats or before finishing. It is repetitive, dusty, and consistency drives the final appearance.
Signs it is worth automating
- Panels are flat or gently curved with consistent geometry.
- Finish consistency complaints are traceable to this step.
- Volumes are steady and the panel range is limited.
- Dust exposure is a live concern for your team.
What the cell looks like
A 5 to 20 kg class arm with a force controlled orbital sander, dust extraction, and a fixture or vacuum table holding the panel. Wide belt sanders are the alternative and are often the better answer for genuinely flat, high volume work.

- A wide belt sander would do it faster and cheaper. Price that first for flat work.
- Panels vary widely in size and shape with no fixturing plan.
- The finish is a craft judgment the customer is buying.
- Your extraction cannot handle the added dust load and no capital is allocated.
What an engineer has to verify
- Whether a wide belt or stroke sander is the better answer than a robot.
- Panel size range and fixturing or vacuum table approach.
- Grit sequence and how many passes the finish requires.
- Abrasive consumption and change frequency at robot duty cycle.
- Dust extraction capacity and filter media cost.
