Can kitting be automated?
Kitting automates well when the parts arrive organized and badly when they arrive in bins, and that single fact decides most of the budget.
What the job actually is
Somebody collects a set of components and arranges them in a tray, box or fixture for a downstream assembly step. Accuracy matters because a missing part shows up much later as a line stoppage.
Signs it is worth automating
- Kitting is a dedicated station with meaningful labor on it.
- Kit contents are stable and documented.
- Components arrive in trays, tubes or feeders already.
- Missed or wrong parts in kits are causing downstream problems worth money.
What the cell looks like
A 3 to 12 kg class arm or a SCARA over presented parts, with the tray located in a fixture. Structured presentation, meaning trays or feeders, keeps this cheap. Random bin presentation means vision and a considerably larger budget.

- Components arrive loose in bins and the budget will not carry bin picking vision.
- Kit contents change constantly and every change means new tooling.
- Volumes are low and an operator kits between other duties.
- Some components are flexible, fragile or tangling, which is a much harder picking problem than it looks.
What an engineer has to verify
- How every component arrives today, in detail. This drives the cost more than anything else.
- Kit content stability and how often the bill of materials changes.
- Gripper coverage across the full component range, or how many tool changes are needed.
- Verification method: how the cell proves a kit is complete.
- Tray location repeatability and whether trays are consistent between suppliers.
Safety is not on that list because it is not ours to determine. Cell design, guarding and the risk assessment belong to an independent certified integrator, every time.

Two clips of this job actually running, from two different manufacturers. Both are the makers' own marketing footage, showing a cell under good conditions with a part it was set up for, so watch them for what the motion looks like rather than as evidence of what your rate would be.
A camera finds parts lying in random directions on a running conveyor and the robot picks them at about 75 a minute into a tray.
