Can deburring be automated?

Before automating deburring, ask why the burr is there. Changing a tool, a feed or an insert is often cheaper than a robot cell.

What the job actually is

Somebody removes burrs and breaks edges on machined parts, with a hand tool, a brush or a file. It is slow, it is inconsistent, and it is frequently a symptom of a machining problem rather than a process in its own right.

What the cell looks like

A 5 to 16 kg class arm with a compliant deburring spindle or brush, over a fixture. Compliance matters because burr size varies part to part. Often paired with an inspection step, since deburring quality is hard to see.
