Can bagging and pouch handling be automated?
Flexible packaging is the hardest material class in handling. Anything that changes shape when you touch it costs more to automate than anything that does not.
What the job actually is
Somebody opens, fills, positions or cartons flexible bags and pouches. The material sags, sticks, and presents a different shape every time, which is exactly what robots handle worst.
Signs it is worth automating
- The step after filling and sealing, meaning case packing, is the labor bottleneck.
- Pouch dimensions and fill are consistent.
- You already have filling and sealing equipment and only the handling is manual.
- Volumes justify dedicated equipment.
What the cell looks like
Usually dedicated packaging machinery rather than a robot, with a robot used for the case packing step after the pouch is filled and sealed. Where robots do handle pouches, the tooling is specialized vacuum or needle gripping and the trial matters more than the specification.

- No supplier will run a trial on your actual film and product before quoting.
What an engineer has to verify
- Whether the real opportunity is dedicated packaging machinery rather than a robot.
- A picking trial on your actual film, product and fill level.
- Pouch dimension and fill variation, measured.
- Where in the sequence the manual labor actually sits.
- Whether product settles or shifts during transfer.
