Can a drone measure stockpiles?

Walking piles with a wheel and guessing tonnage is how inventory becomes fiction. Photogrammetry made truth cheap.

Aggregate yards, mines, mills and terminals carry inventory as piles, and piles are traditionally measured by walking them with survey gear, estimating from truck counts, or accepting that the number is soft. Month end reconciliation against soft numbers produces the arguments every operations manager knows.

A drone survey photographs the yard in a structured pattern, and photogrammetry turns overlapping images into a measurable three dimensional surface. Volumes compute against base surfaces in software, repeatably, with each pile cut the same way every month. Accuracy, done properly with ground control, reaches levels that end reconciliation arguments rather than starting them.

The same flights produce site surveys as a byproduct: progress documentation, haul road condition, pit and quarry mapping, drainage assessment. Fixed wing and VTOL mapping aircraft extend the approach to sites measured in square miles.

What it takes

Mapping capable aircraft (multirotor for compact yards, VTOL fixed wing for large sites), ground control or precise positioning, and photogrammetry software with volumetric tooling. This is the most software shaped application in the catalog: the aircraft is a camera bus, and the product is the processing pipeline.

When a drone is the wrong answer

A yard with three piles and a wheel loader may not repay a program; a scale house already weighing everything may not need one. Under dense vegetation or in dust and steam, photogrammetry degrades, and LiDAR or conventional survey may win. Indoor piles belong to other tools.

What typically needs review

Standard outdoor flight review items, plus mine site rules where applicable. Survey grade claims deserve survey grade verification: agree the accuracy standard and check against known control before the numbers go into inventory.

Own the aircraft, sensor and software, train your own people, and fly on your schedule. Makes sense when the work recurs monthly or better, and it is where our dealer economics live, so we will tell you plainly when it does not make sense.

Rent before you commit

Rental programs exist for much of this equipment, and a rented kit on one real job answers questions no datasheet can. Ask Joe; where rental fits, we point you to it, and as our reseller lines come online we expect to offer rental paths on the equipment we carry.

Hire the flying

A professional operator brings the aircraft, the pilots and the paperwork, and hands you the deliverable. For once or twice a year work this usually wins. We maintain a bench of operators and make introductions after confirming interest and availability, and we are never the operator of record ourselves.
