Can a drone inspect a roof?

The most common commercial drone job there is, and the one where the honest read matters most, because the bar to entry is a credit card.

Roofs and facades need regular condition documentation: membrane condition, ponding, flashings, penetrations, masonry cracks, sealant failure. The traditional method is a ladder crew walking the roof, which costs money, risks people, and on fragile or steep roofs risks the roof itself.

A drone documents the same surfaces from above in a fraction of the time, with photographic coverage a walking crew never produces: every square foot, consistently, comparable year over year. Add thermal imaging flown at the right hour and moisture trapped under the membrane shows as temperature signature, turning an invisible problem into a map of exactly where cores and repairs belong.

For facades, drones photograph elevations that would otherwise need swing stages or lifts, feeding condition assessments and restoration scopes. The output that matters is not pretty pictures but organized evidence: located, dated, comparable and shareable with the roofer, the insurer or the board.

What it takes

This is the accessible end of the market: capable multirotors with good cameras, thermal options for moisture survey, and software that turns flights into organized inspection reports and orthomosaics. Equipment choice here is shaped by compliance posture too, since some buyers require aircraft from approved lists, and we track that dimension deliberately.

When a drone is the wrong answer

A one time look at a small simple roof may be a person with a ladder for less. Thermal moisture survey oversold as magic is our least favorite pitch in this market: it needs the right conditions, the right hour and honest interpretation, or it produces confident nonsense. And documentation is not diagnosis; a roofer still turns findings into a scope.

Outdoor flight over property and near people carries the standard aviation review items: where you are, what is overhead and next door, and who is flying. This is the domain where operating rules bind most visibly, and specialists or trained staff handle them.

Buy the kit

Own the aircraft, sensor and software, train your own people, and fly on your schedule. Makes sense when the work recurs monthly or better, and it is where our dealer economics live, so we will tell you plainly when it does not make sense.

Rent before you commit

Rental programs exist for much of this equipment, and a rented kit on one real job answers questions no datasheet can. Ask Joe; where rental fits, we point you to it, and as our reseller lines come online we expect to offer rental paths on the equipment we carry.

Hire the flying

A professional operator brings the aircraft, the pilots and the paperwork, and hands you the deliverable. For once or twice a year work this usually wins. We maintain a bench of operators and make introductions after confirming interest and availability, and we are never the operator of record ourselves.
