Can tank internal inspection be flown instead of scaffolded?
The strongest drone case in industry is the one where nobody enters the tank at all: no permit, no rescue plan, no scaffold, and the inspector stands outside while the aircraft does the walking.
What the job actually is
Periodic internal inspection of tanks, vessels and chambers means confined-space entry: permits, gas testing, attendants, rescue coverage, and often days of scaffolding built and struck for an hour of actual looking.
Signs it is worth automating
- You scaffold tanks on a calendar to look at welds, coating and corrosion.
- Confined-space entries exist today purely to carry eyes inside.
- Outage time is the constraint and scaffold days are the outage.
- The same assets recur every year or two: the program amortizes.
- Findings drive repairs rarely; most entries confirm nothing changed.
What the cell looks like
A collision-tolerant caged drone flown through the manway by an operator outside: onboard lighting, 4K visual capture, and for some platforms a thickness-measurement payload pressed against the wall in flight. Entry through a standard manway is routine for this class. Your people can be trained to fly it, or a professional operator flies the campaign; either way the deliverable is a documented visual record an inspector reviews.

- The inspection code for this asset explicitly requires contact methods a visual flight cannot satisfy, and no flying contact platform is accepted by your authority.
- The atmosphere or product is incompatible with the aircraft: verify, not assume.
- You need repairs done, not just found; the entry happens anyway.
- One small tank, once: hire the flight, do not buy the aircraft.
What an engineer has to verify
- Whether your inspector of record accepts drone visual data for this asset class, in writing.
- Manway dimensions against the aircraft's published entry envelope.
- Whether thickness readings are required and which contact-capable platform your authority accepts.
- Buy-versus-hire arithmetic at your actual annual tank count.
Safety is not on that list because it is not ours to determine. Cell design, guarding and the risk assessment belong to an independent certified integrator, every time.
