Can overnight building patrol be automated?
An empty office tower at night is a lot of square footage of nothing happening, checked by one person with a flashlight. The economics of that arrangement are what put patrol robots on the map.
What the job actually is
After close, someone walks floors on rounds: doors that should be locked, water where it should not be, people where they should not be. It takes four or five hires to keep one 24/7 chair filled, which is how a single post reaches 150 to 250 thousand dollars a year.
Signs it is worth automating
- The building is genuinely empty overnight and the post exists for rounds and deterrence.
- Your guard log shows the same uneventful round, every hour, for years.
- Water leaks, open doors and propped exits are what actually gets found on rounds.
- Six or more floors make human rounds slow and thin.
- You already have cameras but nobody watches them live.
What the cell looks like
An indoor patrol platform running scheduled routes with cameras and sensors reporting to a remote monitor, or a legged platform where stairs and thresholds rule wheels out. Multi-floor coverage is the design question: elevator integration for wheeled units, stairs for legged ones. The usual honest outcome trims overnight and weekend posts while daytime keeps a person, because lobbies need greeting and judgment.

- The overnight person also runs the loading dock, handles after-hours vendors or does maintenance checks that need hands.
- Your floors are cluttered construction zones where any robot faults nightly.
- The building never actually empties; people around all night shift the case toward cameras plus analytics instead.
- You want it to also be the receptionist. The greeter robot category failed commercially; delivery and patrol survived.
What an engineer has to verify
- Elevator integration: which controller generation your building runs and who is certified to interface with it.
- What the monitoring arrangement costs and who employs the human who responds.
- The failure protocol: what happens the night the robot is docked with a fault.
- Whether your insurer gives any credit for documented continuous patrol; some do.
Safety is not on that list because it is not ours to determine. Cell design, guarding and the risk assessment belong to an independent certified integrator, every time.
