Can depalletizing be automated?
Depalletizing looks like palletizing run backwards. It is harder, because you control how a pallet is built but you do not control how one arrives.
What the job actually is
Somebody breaks down incoming pallets of raw material or components and feeds them to a line. The cases arrive stacked by a supplier, sometimes shifted in transit, sometimes wrapped, sometimes not square.
Signs it is worth automating
- You receive high volumes of consistent, supplier built pallets.
- The same few SKUs arrive repeatedly rather than constant one offs.
- Somebody spends most of a shift breaking down pallets.
- Incoming pallets are reasonably square and undamaged.
What the cell looks like
A 20 to 35 kg class arm with vacuum or clamp tooling and, in most real cases, vision to locate each layer. Layer picking tools that take a whole course at once are common where the product allows. Add a wrap removal step, which is usually manual.

When the answer is no

We would rather talk you out of a bad purchase than into one. If any of these describe your version of this job, the honest answer is probably not yet.
- Pallets arrive shifted, leaning or damaged often enough that vision cannot cope reliably.
- Every supplier stacks differently and patterns are not consistent.
- Stretch wrap removal has to happen first and you have no plan to automate or staff it.
- Volume is low enough that a pallet jack and a person handles it comfortably.
What an engineer has to verify
- Photograph twenty real incoming pallets and count how many are square enough to pick blind.
- Whether wrap removal is in or out of scope, and who does it.
- Case weight and dimensions across all incoming SKUs.
- Whether layer picking is possible or the cell must pick case by case.
- What happens when a layer is short or a case is missing.
Safety is not on that list because it is not ours to determine. Cell design, guarding and the risk assessment belong to an independent certified integrator, every time.

Two clips of this job actually running, from two different manufacturers. Both are the makers' own marketing footage, showing a cell under good conditions with a part it was set up for, so watch them for what the motion looks like rather than as evidence of what your rate would be.
