Satellite servicing is a robotics story
Life extension, inspection, relocation and deorbit are machine tending at 28,000 kilometers per hour.
Strip away the exotic setting and satellite servicing is familiar work. A servicer approaches a machine that is running low on something or misbehaving, docks with it, and does a job: adds propulsion, takes pictures for diagnosis, tows it to a different working position, or walks it down to disposal. On a factory floor we would call that maintenance, inspection, material movement and end of life handling. In orbit it is called life extension, rendezvous and proximity operations, relocation and deorbit.
Life extension is the commercially proven case. Communications satellites in high orbits frequently retire not because their electronics die but because their fuel does. A servicer that docks and takes over station keeping can add years to an asset that is still earning, and that arithmetic is easy to like: the satellite already exists, the revenue already exists, the servicer just extends the overlap.
Inspection is the diagnostic visit. When a satellite goes quiet or behaves strangely, the difference between guessing from telemetry and actually looking at it is the difference between writing off the asset and fixing the right problem. Relocation moves an asset to where it earns more. Deorbit is the disposal job, and regulators in several jurisdictions have been tightening end of life expectations, which quietly turns disposal from a virtue into a requirement with a market behind it.
The honest caveats. This market is young. Missions have succeeded impressively and failed expensively, sometimes in the same year. Capability claims run ahead of flight heritage, and flight heritage is the only spec that fully counts up there. Pricing is negotiated case by case, which is why we do not quote ranges in this domain: any number we gave you would be an anecdote wearing a suit.
