End of life is part of the mission now

Disposal used to be a virtue. It is becoming a requirement, and it belongs in the plan before launch, not after.

Every satellite ends one of three ways. It comes down and burns up, it is moved to a parking orbit out of everyone's way, or it stays where it died and becomes debris, which is the outcome the entire industry is organized around preventing. Which ending your mission gets is decided mostly by choices made before launch: altitude, propulsion, and whether disposal was designed in or hoped for.

Low orbits are self cleaning, slowly. Thin atmosphere drags satellites down over years or decades, with altitude setting the clock. Higher orbits do not clean themselves on any human timescale, which is why high value communications orbits use a different ritual: a retirement burn to a graveyard orbit above the working traffic.

The regulatory direction of travel is one way. Authorities in major jurisdictions have been shortening how long a dead satellite may loiter and looking harder at disposal plans during licensing, and the exact requirements depend on where you license, when, and what you fly. We do not state current thresholds here on purpose: they differ by regime and they change, and our house rule is that regulatory specifics come from qualified specialists, not from a dealer's website. What we will say is that the era of treating disposal as optional is visibly ending.

This is also where the robot in orbit returns. A satellite that cannot deorbit itself, because it died, because it was never designed to, or because the rules tightened after it flew, is exactly the customer for the servicing market: a machine that grabs, drags and disposes. Debris removal and end of life assistance are young services with real missions behind them, and they are the clearest case where one operator's problem is another company's product.

Practically: put disposal in the mission plan on day one, because it constrains propulsion, altitude and budget. Ask launch and satellite partners what happens at end of life and who is responsible.
