On the evening of September 8, 2016, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies in Lancaster, California used the department's Andros robot to end a standoff of more than six hours with a 51-year-old attempted murder and robbery suspect hiding in a dark remote field. While deputies created a distraction with an armored vehicle's public address system and a circling helicopter, the robot's claw moved up and grabbed the suspect's rifle without him noticing, then pulled down wire fencing to expose his position, and he surrendered.

A tactical captain framed the outcome as not having to risk a deputy's life to disarm a violent man, which is the honest claim; nothing in the account suggests robots shorten standoffs on their own. Grabbing a weapon is an improvised use outside the platform's EOD design role, so an agency should write robotics policy covering non-EOD missions, command authorization, and after-action documentation before the need arises.
