Can a drone inspect underground workings?

After a blast, before re-entry, and anywhere ground support is in question, the right first visitor is a machine.

Underground mines live with a brutal question: is it safe to send people back in? After blasting, after seismic events, in old workings and open stopes, the answer requires looking, and looking has meant exposing exactly the people the question is trying to protect.

Underground drones fly the workings first. Post blast reconnaissance confirms breakage and hangups before anyone walks the muck pile. Stope surveys with LiDAR produce volumetric maps of voids no person can enter at all, feeding directly into reconciliation and design. Ground support inspection puts cameras on mesh, bolts and shotcrete at heights and in headings where scaling risk makes human inspection its own hazard.

This is one of the most proven industrial drone domains: GPS denied autonomy matured underground because it had to, and the mapping payloads developed for mining now serve tunnels, caverns and civil underground works generally.

What it takes

GPS denied autonomous aircraft with LiDAR mapping, dust and darkness tolerance, and autonomy modes that keep flying beyond communications range and come back with the map. In gassy mines the equipment conversation changes completely toward certified-for-atmosphere systems, and honesty requires saying the options narrow sharply there.

When a drone is the wrong answer

Where a survey total station or fixed monitoring already answers the deformation question, add nothing. In actively gassy coal environments, equipment certification constraints may rule out most aircraft, and the specialist conversation comes before any purchase. And no drone substitutes for a ground control engineer's judgment; it feeds it.

What typically needs review

Mining regulators, ventilation rules and equipment certification regimes govern underground work tightly and specifically; interior flight does not lift any of it. Specialist review is not optional here.

Buy the kit

Own the aircraft, sensor and software, train your own people, and fly on your schedule. Makes sense when the work recurs monthly or better, and it is where our dealer economics live, so we will tell you plainly when it does not make sense.

Rent before you commit

Hire the flying

A professional operator brings the aircraft, the pilots and the paperwork, and hands you the deliverable. For once or twice a year work this usually wins. We maintain a bench of operators and make introductions after confirming interest and availability, and we are never the operator of record ourselves.
