Can a drone inspect a silo?

Grain, cement and aggregate storage kills people in exactly the situations a drone makes unnecessary.

Silo interiors need looking at for wall condition, buildup, bridging and blockages, and the traditional ways to look are all bad: entry from the top on a lifeline over material that can engulf a person, or waiting for an empty vessel that never quite empties. Engulfment is one of the most persistent killers in agriculture and bulk handling, and most of the fatalities begin with a task as small as checking something.

A caged drone enters through the top hatch or a side port, lights the interior, and documents walls, cone and material surface without anyone crossing the plane of the opening. Bridged or ratholed material, buildup thickness, liner condition and corrosion all show on camera, and the person stays on the outside where the handrails are.

The same aircraft class covers the adjacent jobs: bucket elevator casings, dust collector interiors, tunnel galleries under storage, and headhouse spaces, which turns one purchase into coverage of a family of ugly inspections.

What it takes

Caged, GPS denied, self lighting aircraft; dust tolerance matters even more here than in tanks. In grain and organic dust environments, ask the equipment question early: what is rated for potentially combustible dust atmospheres, and what operational controls the specialist recommends where equipment ratings run out.

When a drone is the wrong answer

A fixed level sensor answers a level question better than a flight does; if the recurring need is only how full, instrument the silo. If material must be physically probed or samples pulled, the drone locates but does not touch. And a badly bridged silo needing intervention is a job for engineered remediation, not more looking.

What typically needs review

Combustible dust atmospheres, confined space rules and grain handling safety standards all still govern the site; interior flight changes the aviation posture, not the plant's obligations. Specialists confirm what applies.
