Can a drone inspect a ballast tank?
A ship is hundreds of confined spaces wearing one hull, and every one of them traditionally means staging, ladders and a person in the dark.
Marine surveys require close visual inspection of spaces measured in the hundreds per vessel: ballast tanks, cargo holds, cofferdams, void spaces, engine room tanks. Class societies require the looking on schedule, and the traditional method is rafting or staging inside each space, with surveyors climbing through lightening holes for days per tank.
Caged drones fly the tanks instead, putting a surveyor's eye on frames, welds, coatings and anodes without staging. Several classification societies have published acceptance pathways for drone assisted surveys, and the shipyard arithmetic is straightforward: staging avoided is money and days measured per tank, multiplied across the vessel.
The same capability serves shipbuilding quality control, offshore structures, and the ugly corners of ports and terminals: silo like cells in bulk terminals, enclosed conveyor galleries, and hull exteriors in dock where lifts are awkward.

What it takes
The confined space class again: caged, self lighting, GPS denied, tolerant of rust dust and residue, with reporting software that maps findings to frame and compartment. Marine specifics worth asking: coating inspection camera quality, and what the attending class surveyor will accept, which varies by society and by surveyor.
When a drone is the wrong answer
Where close-up survey requires thickness measurement, the drone locates and a gauging crew follows; do not promise a gauging-free survey. Small voids may be pole camera territory. And if the class surveyor on the job has not agreed to remote visual evidence beforehand, the flight risks being a rehearsal, so settle it in the survey plan.

Class society rules, flag state expectations, marine confined space procedures and shipyard hot work controls all continue to apply; the drone changes access, not obligations. Specialists and the attending surveyor make the determinations.
