Can a drone inspect the inside of a tank?

This is the strongest drone case in industry, because the alternative is a permit, a rescue plan, scaffolding or rope access, and a person inside a space that was never meant to hold one.

The job is to see the interior condition of a closed steel or concrete world: storage tanks, process vessels, chambers and pits. Today that means confined space entry, and entry is the expensive part: atmospheric testing, ventilation, an attendant at the manway, a rescue plan, and often days of scaffold build just to put eyes at height. The inspection itself is minutes of looking wrapped in days of getting a person there safely.

A confined space drone changes the arithmetic by removing the person. The aircraft flies through the manway, a cage around it shrugs off contact with walls and internals, onboard lighting brings its own daylight, and the pilot stands outside the space watching a screen. The deliverable is video and stills mapped to locations, frequently good enough for a certified inspector to disposition findings without anyone entering, and to target the one spot that genuinely needs a person or a thickness reading.

Flight in these spaces is genuinely hard, which is exactly why it is worth doing with the right equipment. There is no GPS inside a tank, so the aircraft holds position by sensing the space around it. Dust rises the moment rotors spin, so lighting and camera placement matter more than megapixels. And every surface is a collision waiting to happen, which is what the cage and collision tolerant design exist for.

What it takes

Collision tolerant caged aircraft built for interiors, GPS denied stabilization, powerful onboard LED lighting, a camera that can expose correctly in dust and darkness, and often a thermal or ultrasonic-adjacent payload for specific findings. Flown by your trained operator or a specialist service; the reporting software that organizes footage into an inspection record is half the product.

When a drone is the wrong answer

If the vessel is small enough to see fully from the manway with a pole camera, buy the pole camera. If the finding you need is a precise wall thickness number, a drone locates the spot but a contact gauge still takes the reading. And if the space is actively inerted or explosive, the whole operation plan, not just the aircraft, has to be rated for it, which is a specialist conversation before it is an equipment one.

Rent before you commit

A professional operator brings the aircraft, the pilots and the paperwork, and hands you the deliverable. For once or twice a year work this usually wins.
